Lightning Protection Testing

Lightning strikes are a common sight in the UK, causing significant damage to buildings and structures. Lightning strike protection systems are designed to offer protection against the damaging effects of lightning.

What are Lighting Strike Protection Systems?

Lightning strike protection systems, also known simply as lightning protection systems, are designed to protect buildings and structures from the damaging effects of lightning strikes.

The systems consist of a network of conductors, rods, and grounding equipment that are installed on the roof of a building or structure. The conductors and rods are designed to intercept lightning strikes and direct the electrical energy safely to the ground.

Why do we need to test?

Lightning strikes can cause fires, damage to electrical systems, and even structural damage to buildings - they can also pose a significant risk to the safety of people within.

UK Building Regulations 2010 requires that all buildings, including new builds and existing buildings, have adequate protection against the risk of lightning strikes. The regulations state that buildings must be designed and constructed in such a way as to avoid the dangers of lightning and that reasonable precautions must be taken to prevent injury to people and damage to the building.

The Importance of Maintenance & Testing

Maintenance and testing are essential for lightning strike protection systems to ensure that they are functioning correctly and continue to provide adequate protection.

The UK standard recommends that the systems be inspected and tested at least once every 12 months by a qualified and experienced lightning protection engineer. The inspection and testing should include a visual inspection of the system, as well as testing of the conductors and earth terminations - as laid out in the British Standards Institution’s BS EN 62305-3:2011 publication
